23 Prayers for Our Government to Do the Right Thing

Prayers for Our Government

If you’ve been watching the news lately, you’ve probably felt it. That familiar knot in your stomach. That heaviness that settles in when you see the decisions being made by those in power and wonder whether anyone up there is truly seeking what is good, what is right, and what is just.

It’s easy to feel helpless. It’s easy to feel angry. And honestly? Those feelings make complete sense.

But here is what I know to be true: we are not without influence. In fact, we have access to the most powerful force in the universe, and it is not a ballot box or a protest sign. We can pray to God.

Scripture is incredibly clear that God cares deeply about how governments operate. He is not distant from the affairs of nations. He raises up leaders and He removes them. He is the God of justice, and He hears the prayers of His people when they cry out on behalf of their communities, their countries, and even the leaders they may deeply disagree with.

These prayers for our government are intercessions that have the power to shift the atmosphere over your nation. They are an invitation to partner with God in what He is already doing, and to believe that He is still very much in control.

Let’s pray together.

Why God Calls Us to Pray for Our Government

Before we get into the prayers, it’s worth pausing on this question: why should we pray for leaders we didn’t vote for, leaders we don’t trust, or leaders whose decisions break our hearts?

The answer is found in 1 Timothy 2:1-2, where Paul urges believers to pray for kings and all those in authority, so that we may live peaceful and godly lives. He didn’t write that in a season of good governance. He wrote it under Roman rule, under emperors who persecuted Christians and abused their power. And still, the instruction was clear: pray.

When we pray for our government, we are not endorsing every decision that is made. We are acknowledging that God is sovereign over every seat of power, and we are asking Him to move in ways that no human strategy or political campaign ever could.

We are also positioning ourselves as intercessors, people who stand in the gap between what is and what God intends. That is a holy and significant calling.

So wherever you find yourself today, whether you are hopeful, discouraged, or simply exhausted by it all, these prayers for our government are a place to start.

Prayers for Our Government to Have Wisdom and Make Right Decisions

One of the greatest things we can ask God to give our leaders is wisdom. Not just cleverness or political savvy, but the kind of wisdom that comes from God alone: wisdom that sees beyond party lines, personal ambition, and short-term gain, and chooses instead what is genuinely good for the people.

These prayers invite God to be the source of every decision made in the halls of government, because we know that without Him, even the best-intentioned leader will eventually miss the mark.

Prayers for Our Government to Have Wisdom and Make Right Decisions

1. Ask God to pour out His wisdom on the leaders of our government

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” (James 1:5)

My Loving Lord, I come before You today and ask that You pour out Your wisdom on the leaders of our government. Where they lack understanding, be their teacher. Where they are confused by competing voices, be their clarity. You give generously to all who ask, so I ask on their behalf today. May they turn to You for the wisdom they need to govern well and to do what is right. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

2. Pray that God would surround our leaders with wise and godly counsel

“Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” (Proverbs 11:14)

Faithful Father, I pray that You would surround our leaders with wise, godly counsel. Remove from their inner circle every voice that leads toward corruption and self-interest, and replace it with voices that honor You. May they have the humility to listen, the discernment to know which advice to follow, and the courage to choose rightly even when it is costly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

3. Ask God to be the true source of knowledge for those who govern us (Proverbs 2:6)

“For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

God, all true wisdom comes from You alone. I pray that the leaders of our government would recognize this and seek You sincerely. Open their hearts to the knowledge and understanding that only You can give. Where they have been relying on their own strength and insight, humble them gently and draw them back to the only Source that never fails. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

4. Pray that our leaders would hear God’s voice clearly in every critical decision (Isaiah 30:21)

“And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.”

Lord, I pray that our leaders would hear Your voice in the moments that matter most. When they face a fork in the road, when the pressure is high and the stakes are great, let them hear clearly: this is the way, walk in it. Guard them from the detours of pride, fear, and selfish ambition. Let Your voice be louder than every other. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

5. Pray God to anchor our government in fairness and faithful judgment for every person (Proverbs 29:14)

“If a king faithfully judges the poor, his throne will be established forever.”

God Almighty, I ask that You anchor our government in a commitment to fairness and faithful judgment for every person, especially those who are poor and have no platform to advocate for themselves. Establish those leaders who choose integrity and justice, and may their examples inspire others to do the same. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayers for Our Government to Choose Justice and Integrity

Justice is not just a political value. It is the heartbeat of God. Throughout Scripture, He speaks passionately about the treatment of the vulnerable, the poor, the widow, and the stranger. He is not indifferent to how power is used or abused.

These prayers for our government ask God to work in the hearts of those in authority, turning them away from corruption and self-service, and toward the kind of justice that reflects His own character.

6. Pray that our leaders would choose to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly before God

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8)

O’ Lord Jesus, Your requirements are not complicated, but they are deeply countercultural in the world of politics. I pray that our leaders would embrace what You have always asked: to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly before You. Strip away the performance, the posturing, and the pride, and replace it with a genuine desire to do what is good. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

7. Ask God to move our leaders to defend the weak, the fatherless, and the destitute

“Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” (Psalm 82:3-4)

Mighty Father, I lift up every person in our nation who is weak, forgotten, and overlooked by those in power. I ask that You move on the hearts of our leaders to see them clearly and to act on their behalf with urgency and compassion. Let our laws and policies reflect Your heart for those who cannot advocate for themselves. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

8. Pray that our leaders would choose righteousness over recognition (Proverbs 21:3)

“To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.”

Gracious God, I pray that the leaders of our government would understand that no amount of grand speeches, ceremony, or political theatre is more valuable to You than simple righteousness. Help them to choose what is right, even in the small and unnoticed moments. Cultivate in them a love for integrity that goes deeper than their public image. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

9. Ask God to raise up leaders who will correct oppression and protect the vulnerable (Isaiah 1:17)

“Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.”

Precious Jesus, I pray against every system of oppression that our government has allowed or enabled. I ask that You raise up leaders who are committed to correcting injustice, protecting the fatherless, and advocating for those who have been pushed to the margins of society. Let righteousness be the standard, not just a talking point. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

10. Ask that justice would roll through our nation like an ever-flowing stream

“But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” (Amos 5:24)

El-Roi, this is my prayer for our nation: let justice roll. Not in fits and starts, not as a political convenience, but as an ever-flowing stream that reaches every corner of our society. Move in our government with the power that only You have, and let righteousness become the very current our nation flows in. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayers for Our Government Leaders to Fear God

There is a kind of fear that destroys, and there is a kind of fear that saves. The fear of God is the latter. It is the reverent, humbling, awe-inspiring recognition that there is a God above every government, every law, and every seat of power, and that He sees all things and holds all things accountable. When a leader has this fear, it changes everything about how they lead.

These prayers ask God to draw our leaders into that reverence, because a government that fears God is a government that will ultimately seek to do right by the people it serves.

11. Ask God to remind our leaders that their authority is established by righteousness, not power (Proverbs 16:12)

“It is an abomination to kings to do evil, for the throne is established by righteousness.”

Loving Father, remind our leaders that power is not established by cunning, by wealth, or by political alliance. It is established by righteousness. I pray that every leader in our government would feel the weight of this truth, that evil in high places is a dangerous and unstable foundation. Build our government on righteousness, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

12. Ask that our leaders would govern with the awareness that they are accountable to God (Romans 13:1)

“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.”

O’ Lord, I thank You that You are sovereign over every seat of authority in our nation. Not a single position of power exists outside of Your awareness and Your permission. I ask that You would use this truth to both humble our leaders and to mobilize their sense of accountability. May they govern knowing that they will one day answer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

13. Pray that arrogance in our government would be replaced with the fear of the Lord

“Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.” (Psalm 2:10-11)

King of kings, I pray this ancient counsel over our modern leaders: be wise and be warned. Serve with the fear of the Lord. Let there be a holy sobriety in the way they approach their positions, a deep awareness that they are stewards of something that belongs to You. Replace arrogance with reverence, and self-interest with a trembling desire to please You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

14. Ask God to govern through our leaders so that every just decree carries His fingerprints (Proverbs 8:15-16)

“By me kings reign, and rulers decree what is just; by me princes rule, and nobles, all who govern justly.”

Lord of lords, every just decree, every righteous law, every good decision that has ever come from government has come by You and through You. I ask that You make Yourself known to the leaders of our nation, that they would govern not in their own strength, but through Your wisdom and authority working in them. Let every just decree in our land carry Your fingerprints. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayers Against Corruption and Deception in Government

Corruption is not a new problem. It has been present in governments since the beginning of human history. But God has always been opposed to it, and He has always been in the business of exposing it and dismantling it when His people pray.

Prayers Against Corruption and Deception in Government

These prayers for our government are declarations against the spirit of deception, dishonesty, and self-serving leadership that can take root in positions of power. We are not fighting against people. We are standing against the spiritual forces that influence them, and we are asking God to bring truth and light into every dark corner.

15. Ask God to expose every perversion of justice and bring accountability where there has been none (Proverbs 17:15)

“He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous are both alike an abomination to the LORD.”

Merciful Father, I pray against every perversion of justice in our government. Where the guilty are being protected and the innocent are being condemned, I ask You to intervene. Expose what is hidden, correct what is crooked, and bring accountability where there has been none. You are a God who does not turn a blind eye to injustice, and I trust You to move. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

16. Pray against every spirit of deception and dishonesty operating within our government (Psalm 101:7)

“No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who utters lies shall continue before my eyes.”

Precious Lord, I pray against every spirit of deception and dishonesty operating within our government. Expose the lies that have been told to the people, dismantle the systems that have been built on deception, and raise up leaders who are committed to truth, even when it is inconvenient. Let integrity and honesty be the standard our nation returns to. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

17. Ask God to close the ears of our leaders to flattery and open them to truth

“If a ruler listens to falsehood, all his officials will be wicked.” (Proverbs 29:12)

My God Almighty, I pray that You would close the ears of our leaders to the voices of those who would mislead them for personal gain. Guard them against flattery, against biased counsel, and against the echo chambers that only tell them what they want to hear. Surround them instead with truth, even when it is uncomfortable, and give them the courage to act on it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayers for Peace and Unity in Our Nation

Division is one of the enemy’s most effective tools against a nation. When a country turns against itself, when neighbor becomes adversary and debate becomes hostility, the enemy doesn’t need to do much else. God, on the other hand, is a God of peace and unity.

These prayers intercede not just for the government, but for the atmosphere it creates, asking God to bring a spirit of genuine reconciliation, cooperation, and peace to our nation, starting in the very halls where laws are made.

18. Intercede for every person in authority so that we may live peaceful and godly lives

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2)

Prince of Peace, I come to You with a sincere and believing heart, lifting up every person in a position of authority in our government. I pray for their wellbeing, their clarity of mind, and their genuine desire to serve the people well. May the decisions they make create an environment of peace, dignity, and godliness in our nation. And may Your people flourish under their governance. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

19. Choose to seek the welfare of your nation and pray to God on its behalf (Jeremiah 29:7)

“But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.”

Lord Jesus, I choose today to seek the welfare of my nation, even in the places and policies where I deeply disagree. I pray for the welfare of this government, not because I endorse every decision, but because I trust that You can work through it for good. Let my prayers contribute to the peace and wellbeing of the nation You have placed me in. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

20. Ask God to bring genuine peace, security, and unity to our nation (Psalm 122:6-7)

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ‘May they be secure who love you! Peace be within your walls and security within your towers!'”

O’ Faithful God, I pray for peace within our nation’s borders, peace that is not just the absence of conflict but the presence of Your shalom. Bring security to our communities, stability to our institutions, and genuine unity to a people who have been so deeply divided. Only You can do this, Lord, and I believe that You can. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayers for Our Government to Protect the Poor and Vulnerable

Throughout Scripture, God makes it unmistakably clear that how a government treats its most vulnerable citizens is a direct reflection of its moral character. He speaks for the poor, the widow, the orphan, and the stranger, and He calls those in power to do the same.

Prayers for Our Government to Protect the Poor and Vulnerable

These prayers ask God to place a genuine burden for the vulnerable on the hearts of our leaders, so that the decisions they make in office would reflect the compassion and justice that God has always required.

21. Ask God to give our leaders a voice and a will to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves (Proverbs 31:8-9)

“Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the poor and needy.”

Merciful Lord, I pray that You would give our leaders a voice and a will to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. The destitute, the marginalized, the forgotten, let our government not pass over them in the pursuit of popularity or profit. Raise up bold voices in positions of power who will defend the poor and judge righteously, even when it costs them something. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

22. Pray that our leaders would defend the poor and dismantle every system of oppression (Psalm 72:4)

“May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor!”

Father, I pray this ancient prayer over our modern leaders. May they defend the cause of the poor. May they act swiftly to deliver those who are being crushed by systems that exploit rather than protect. And where oppression is operating within our own governmental structures, I ask You to expose it and dismantle it by Your power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Final Prayer of Hope and Surrender

After all the petitions, all the intercessions, and all the specific prayers we have brought before God, there is one more posture that matters deeply: surrender. We can pray with boldness and faith, and still release the outcome to the God who sees what we cannot see. This final prayer is perhaps the most important of all, because it is the one that reminds us who is really in charge.

23. Humble yourself before God and ask Him to forgive our nation and heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14)

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

God Almighty, I come before You in humility. Not just on behalf of our government, but on behalf of all of us, because we know that the healing of a nation begins with the repentance of Your people. I humble myself before You today. I seek Your face. I ask You to forgive what needs to be forgiven and to heal what has been broken in our land. We cannot fix this on our own. You can turn the hearts of our leaders. You can do what no election, no legislation, and no human plan could ever accomplish. We trust You. We need You. Come and heal our land. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Final Word to Everyone Who Is Praying

These prayers for our government may feel small in the face of everything happening around you. I understand that. There are days when it feels like prayer couldn’t possibly be enough to address the scale of what we’re seeing in our governments, our communities, and our world.

But I want to remind you of something: God has never needed the odds to be in His favor. He parted a sea. He brought down a wall with a shout. He turned the heart of a pagan king to release an entire nation. He raised His Son from the dead.

And He responds to the faithful, persistent, believing prayers of His people.

So keep praying. Pray over the news instead of just consuming it. Pray before you speak. Pray when you feel helpless, because that is exactly when prayer is most powerful. Bring these prayers back to God again and again, and trust that He who began a good work in our world is faithful to complete it.

He is still on the throne. And that is reason enough to keep interceding.

Believing with you.
