Bible reading: Judges chapters 13–16. The main story of Samson and Delilah is in Judges 16:4–31.
Who Was Samson in the Bible?
Before we read about Delilah, we need to know who Samson was.
Samson was a man from Israel. He lived at a time when the Philistines were ruling over the people of Israel.
The Philistines often fought against the Israelites.
God chose Samson before he was born to begin saving His people from the Philistines.
The Birth of Samson
Read: Judges 13:2–25
Samson’s father was named Manoah.
For many years, Manoah and his wife had no child.
One day, an angel of the Lord appeared to Samson’s mother.
The angel told her that she would have a baby boy.
The angel also gave her special instructions.
Her son’s hair was never to be cut.
The boy would be a Nazirite from birth. This means he was set apart for God’s special work.
When the baby was born, his parents named him Samson.
As Samson grew, God blessed him.
God gave Samson great strength.
How Strong Was Samson?
Read: Judges 14–15
Samson was much stronger than an ordinary man.
The Bible tells us about some amazing things he did.
One day, a young lion attacked him. Samson killed the lion with his bare hands.
Another time, he fought against many Philistines using the jawbone of a donkey.
He also carried away the heavy gates of a city called Gaza.
These events made Samson famous for his strength.
But there was something important Samson needed to learn.
Being strong did not mean that he would always make wise choices.
And this is where the story of Delilah begins.
Who Was Delilah in the Bible?
Delilah was a woman who lived in a place called the Valley of Sorek.
The Bible tells us that Samson fell in love with her.
But Delilah became part of a plan to capture Samson.
The Philistine leaders knew Samson was very strong. They wanted to find out how to make him weak.
So they went to Delilah and offered her money to help them.
The Bible does not tell us much about Delilah’s family or her childhood.
It also does not say that Samson and Delilah were married.
We only know the details recorded in Judges 16.

Samson met a woman named Delilah.
She lived in the Valley of Sorek.
Samson fell in love with her.
The Bible does not tell us how they met.
It simply tells us that Samson loved Delilah.

They saw a chance to capture Samson.
2. The Philistines Offered Delilah Money (Judges 16:5–6)
The Philistine leaders went to Delilah.
They wanted her to find out why Samson was so strong.
They also wanted to know how they could tie him up so that he could not escape.
Each leader promised Delilah 1,100 pieces of silver if she helped them.
This was a large offer.
Delilah agreed to help.
She began asking Samson questions about his strength.
She wanted him to tell her his secret.
But Samson did not tell her the truth at first.
3. Samson Told Delilah His First Lie (Judges 16:7–9)
Delilah asked Samson how someone could make him weak.
Samson told her that seven new bowstrings could hold him.
Bowstrings are strong cords used on bows for shooting arrows.
Delilah got seven bowstrings and tied Samson with them.
Then she warned him that the Philistines were coming.
But Samson broke the cords easily.
He was still strong.
Delilah had not found his secret.
4. Samson Told Delilah His Second Lie (Judges 16:10–12)
Delilah was upset because Samson had not told her the truth.
She asked him again how someone could tie him up.
This time, Samson said that new ropes would make him weak.
Delilah found new ropes and tied him with them.
Again, she warned him about the Philistines.
But Samson broke the ropes easily.
He was still strong.
Delilah had failed again.
5. Samson Told Delilah His Third Lie (Judges 16:13–14)
Delilah did not give up.
She asked Samson the same question again.
This time, Samson told her to weave the seven locks of his hair into cloth on a weaving machine.
A weaving machine, called a loom, is used to make cloth.
Delilah tried what Samson had said while he was sleeping.
Then she woke him and warned him about the Philistines.
But Samson pulled his hair free.
His strength had not left him.
For the third time, Delilah failed.
6. Samson Finally Told Delilah the Truth (Judges 16:15–17)
Delilah kept asking Samson to tell her his secret.
She asked him day after day.
She also questioned whether he truly loved her.
After some time, Samson grew tired of her questions.
At last, he told her the truth.
He explained that his hair had never been cut because he had been set apart for God from before his birth.
Samson said that if his hair were shaved, he would lose his strength and become like other men.
Delilah now knew what she wanted to know.
She quickly sent a message to the Philistine leaders.
She told them to come back because Samson had revealed his secret.
7. Delilah Helped the Philistines Capture Samson (Judges 16:18–20)
The Philistine leaders returned with the money they had promised.
Delilah made Samson sleep with his head on her lap.
While he was sleeping, she called a man to shave off the seven locks of Samson’s hair.
Samson’s strength left him.
Then Delilah woke him and warned him that the Philistines were coming.
Samson thought he could escape as he had done before.
But this time, he could not.
The Bible says that Samson did not know the Lord had left him.
His enemies were now able to capture him.
8. Samson Lost His Freedom (Judges 16:21–22)
The Philistines captured Samson.
They took away his sight so that he could no longer see.
They put chains on him and took him to Gaza.
There, they made him grind grain in prison.
Samson was no longer free.
The strong man who had escaped his enemies many times was now their prisoner.
But something happened while he was in prison.
His hair began to grow again.
And the story was not yet over.
9. Samson Prayed to God One Last Time (Judges 16:23–30)
One day, the Philistine leaders gathered for a great celebration.
They were happy because they had captured Samson.
They praised their god, Dagon, for their victory.
They brought Samson out of prison so that the people could make fun of him.
Samson asked the boy who was leading him to help him touch the two large pillars holding up the building.
Then Samson prayed to the Lord.
He asked God to remember him and give him strength one more time.
Samson placed his hands on the pillars.
He pushed with all his strength.
The building fell.
Samson died, and many Philistines also died.
This was a sad and violent ending to his life.
The Bible records what Samson did, but it does not tell us to copy his final act.
10. Samson Was Buried by His Family ( Judges 16:31)
After Samson died, his family came to take his body home.
They buried him in the tomb of his father, Manoah.
The Bible tells us that Samson had been a judge in Israel for twenty years.
A judge was a leader who helped guide Israel during that time.
Samson had great strength.
But his story also shows that even a strong person can make serious mistakes.
Why Did Samson Lose His Strength?
Many people think that Samson was strong simply because he had long hair.
But there is more to the story.
The Bible teaches that God was the source of Samson’s strength.
Samson’s long hair was a sign that he had been set apart for God.
He had never cut his hair because of this special calling.
When Delilah arranged for his hair to be shaved, Samson lost his strength.
Judges 16:20 also tells us that the Lord had left him.
So Samson’s hair was not magic.
His great strength came from God.
This is one of the most important things to understand about the story.

We can learn that being strong or talented is not enough.
We also need wisdom.

2. Be Careful Who You Trust
Samson loved Delilah.

Trust is important in friendship and family life.
However, we should pay attention to how people treat us.
A good friend should not try to hurt us or use our private information against us.

Money is useful, but it should not lead us to do what is wrong.
We should not lie, steal, or hurt others just to get money.
Lesson: Always try to do what is right, even when someone offers you a reward for doing wrong.
5. We Can Pray to God During Difficult Times
After Samson was captured, he suffered greatly.
Near the end of his life, he prayed to God again.
His story reminds us that prayer was still part of his life after his mistakes.
